Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a children's book by English author Lewis Carroll, first published in 1865. With over 40 illustrations by John Tenniel, it tells the story of Alice, a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole and enters a fantasy, nonsense world. She meets characters such as the white rabbit, the cheshire cat, the mock turtle, the dodo, the march hare, the mad hatter, the Duchess, the Knave, and the King and Queen of hearts. Each character interacts with Alice, often speaking in a confusing and seemingly illogical way. Towards the end of the story, she is forced to take part in a trial where the Knave stands accused of stealing the Queen's tarts. Throughout the book, Alice finds herself at odds with the nonsense way in which the creatures speak to her. Perhaps one of the most famous and beloved of children's books, it is also enjoyed by older readers and has been adapated to film and tv many times, and has spawned everything from costumes to theme parks.
