Black Rebellion: Five Slave Revolts by American author and abolitionist Thomas Wentworth Higginson was first published in 1889. It consists of the last five chapters of his book Travellers and Outlaws and gives accounts of five slave rebellions that occurred throughout history. It includes the rebellion of Nat Turner, who led a revolt that killed around fifty people, making it the deadliest slave revolt in US history, and Denmark Vesey, who planned a major slave revolt in 1822. Higginson also covers rebellions in Jamaica and Suriname, led by constant guerrilla warfare by Maroons (descendants of Africans in the Americas and Islands of the Indian Ocean).
