The Croquet Player is a 1936 novella by H. G. Wells. One day whilst playing croquet, Georgie starts a conversation with Dr Finchatton, who proceeds to tell him a story about Cainsmarsh and the ghosts and evils that dwell there, and how he is convinced that a malign presence exists in the district. Georgie seeks answers to this, questioning the curator of the museum, and meeting with Finchatton's psychiatrist. The story is an allegory of war and of the fear of how throughout history - 'there has been no real change, no real escape. Civilization, progress, all that, we are discovering, was a delusion'.
