The Flying Girl and Her Chum is a book by children's author L. Frank Baum, first published in 1912 under the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne. It is a sequel to The Flying Girl, which was published in 1911. In the previous novel, a young woman called Orissa Kane, provides financial support to her brother Steve as he builds his own flying machine. In the follow-up tale, Steve's brand-new hydroplane encounters mechanical difficulties, compelling Orissa and her companion Sybil to make an emergency landing on a distant island. (Interestingly, a comparable narrative featuring two adventurous girls would also emerge in Baum's last Oz book, Glinda of Oz, towards the end of that same decade.) This second novel deviates from its predecessor by placing a greater emphasis on pure adventure rather than aviation.
This book has 60,263 words, 122 pages in the PDF version, and was originally published in 1912.
