Many succumb to slow, agonizing deaths, saved only by the chance encounter of a passing boat. Upon their return home, Ward and his surviving companions are hailed as heroes. The narrative then shifts to Lloyd, a young and charming nurse who, despite her wealth, chooses to work in the medical field. It is revealed that Lloyd shares a mutual affection with Ward, though neither has confessed their feelings. The book was one of three romantic novels by Norris who typically wrote about more serious topics.
