Marie: An Episode in the Life of the Late Allan Quatermain is a novel by H. Rider Haggard, first published in 1912. It is the third book chronologically in the Allan Quatermain/Ayesha series of novels. The book tells the story of Allan Quatermain as a young man, and his first marriage to Marie Marais, a young Boer farm girl. Having first met Maria when they were children, their friendship blossoms into love. Maria's father however, is against this. He has already promised Maria to anther Boer called Hernando Pereira, and tries everything in his power to separate his daughter from Allan, with tragic consequences. Set in Cradock, South Africa, the novel includes real life characters such as Piet Retief (a Voortrekker leader), the Zulu chief Dingane, and Thomas Halstead (an English trader), as well as describing Quatermain's involvement in the Sixth Xhosa War and the Weenen massacre.
