In addition, Sherman discusses his post-war career, including his service as the commanding general of the United States Army and his involvement in the Indian Wars in the western United States. President Ulysses S. Grant had been told that the book treated him unfairly, but after reading it, he remarked that '...it was a true book, an honorable book, creditable to Sherman, just to his companions — to myself particularly so — just such a book as I expected Sherman would write.'
