The Mis-Education of the Negro is a book by American historian, author, and journalist Carter G. Woodson, and was first published in 1933. It is a critical examination of the American education system's failure to properly educate African Americans. Woodson, known as the 'Father of Black History,' argues that the educational system was designed to perpetuate white supremacy and discourage Black people from understanding and celebrating their own heritage. He critiques how the system conditions Black people to feel inferior and to aspire to fit into a white-dominated society, neglecting the richness of African history and culture. Woodson emphasizes the importance of self-education, urging African Americans to reclaim their identity, history, and intellectual autonomy. He advocates for an education that empowers Black people to contribute to their communities and reject the notion that their worth is tied to assimilation into a predominantly white culture. The book is a call to action for individuals and institutions to reevaluate how history is taught and to prioritize an education that fosters critical thinking, pride, and self-reliance among African Americans.
