Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, originally published in 1915, is a collection of short free verse poems. Each poem is an autobiographical epitaph of a dead person that lived in the fictional town of Spoon River, named after the real Spoon River that ran near Masters' home town of Lewistown, Illinois. With 212 distinct characters featured, the anthology encompasses 244 reflections on their lives, losses, and modes of demise. Many poems intertwine with one another, constructing a candid tableau of the community. A lot of the characters are inspired by real people Masters knew or had heard of, and the poems form a story of sorts - of gratitude, of pettiness, of love, and of the histories of their lives.
