The Story of Doctor Dolittle, Being the History of His Peculiar Life at Home and Astonishing Adventures in Foreign Parts is a book by English author Hugh Lofting. Originally published in 1920, this is the first in the Doctor Dolittle series. The novels tell the story of John Dolittle who lives with his sister in the small village of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh. A doctor by profession, he finds himself with less work because his patients are scared of all the animals in his home. After learning the secret of speaking to animals with help from his parrot Polynesia, he abandons human medicine and becomes a vet. His adventures start when his fame spreads throughout the animal kingdom, and he travels to Africa to help some monkeys. The character of John Dolittle was developed when Lofting was serving in the British Army during WWI. Writing from the trenches, and not wanting his children to know of the brutality happening around him, he instead wrote imaginative letters which then became the foundation for the books.
