Description

Triplanetary is a science fiction novel by E. E. Smith, first published in 1934. It is the first book in Smith's Lensman series, and is a sweeping space opera that spans millions of years and follows the cosmic conflict between two powerful alien races — the noble Arisians and the malevolent Eddorians. The Arisians secretly guide humanity's development, preparing them to one day oppose the Eddorians, who are bent on dominating the universe. Set in Earth's near future, the story follows the rise of the Triplanetary League, a defense organization uniting Earth, Mars, and Venus. Amid this interplanetary backdrop, various factions clash, including pirate-scientist Roger, and the Nevians — an alien race that disrupts the balance with their advanced technology and destructive powers. Triplanetary combines large-scale cosmic battles with personal struggles, setting the stage for the broader Lensman series and exploring themes of heroism, survival, and the fate of civilizations. Originally serialized in the magazine Amazing Stories, it was later reworked to fit in with the Lensman series in 1948.
