Description

Venetia is a book by Benjamin Disraeli, first published in 1837. This romantic novel, written before Disraeli’s rise as a prominent British politician and eventual Prime Minister, reflects his early literary ambitions and fascination with the lives of the British elite. Set against the backdrop of England’s aristocratic society, the story follows Venetia Herbert, a beautiful and sheltered young woman who becomes entangled in a tale of love, family secrets, and personal awakening. The novel is notable for its thinly veiled portrayals of two literary giants — Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley — represented through fictionalized characters. Through their romanticized depictions, Disraeli explores themes of genius, societal rejection, and the tension between personal desire and social expectation. While Venetia is primarily a work of fiction, it offers a glimpse into the literary and cultural sensibilities of the Romantic era. Though not as politically charged as Disraeli’s later novels, Venetia reveals his sharp understanding of social structures and individual struggles within the rigid confines of high society.
