Description

The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle is a children's book by Hugh Lofting. First published in 1922, it is the second book in the Doctor Dolittle series, and is narrated by Tommy Stubbins who finds a squirrel that has been injured by a hawk. He is told to get in touch with Doctor Dolittle who can converse with the animals. After becoming acquainted with the strange animals in the Doctors house such as the Wiff-Waff fish, Tommy begins studying with the Doctor, and Polynesia the parrot starts teaching him the language of the animals. Informed by the Purple Bird of Paradise that Long Arrow, son of Golden Arrow (a friend of the Doctor) has gone missing, Doctor Dolittle decides to go to Spider Monkey Island to rescue him. On the way, they discover stowaways, make a deal with the bullfighters of Spain, and, become shipwrecked. When they finally get to their destination, in addition to rescuing Long Arrow, the Doctor and his crew must also fight to save the people of the Island. Far longer than the first book, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle is divided into six parts, and is aimed at a slightly more mature audience than The Story of Doctor Dolittle.
