The Wood Beyond the World by William Morris, first published in 1894, is a fantasy novel considered one of the early works of modern fantasy literature. It tells the story of Walter, a young man who embarks on an adventure after being betrayed by his wife and feeling disconnected from his life. While on a trading voyage, he encounters three mysterious figures: a beautiful maiden, a stern lady, and a sinister dwarf. These characters lead him into an otherworldly realm beyond the known world, where he must navigate a series of magical trials and intrigues. Walter soon becomes entangled in a conflict between the lady and the maiden, with the dwarf acting as the lady's servant. The novel is filled with vivid descriptions of strange lands and supernatural occurrences, and explores themes of love, betrayal, and destiny. It is written in an archaic style, mimicking medieval romances, and helped pave the way for the fantasy genre as we know it today.
